Travel Review: Kokodo Guest House, Cape Coast, Ghana
While I loved my time in Bolgatanga I must confess that so far with my Ghana discoveries, Cape Coast has my whole heart.
Maybe it’s that the Ocean and history remind me of Freetown but every time I return to Cape Coast there is an immediate calm that descends on me.
This story though isn’t about Cape Coast. It’s about Kokodo Guest House, a lovely 6-bedroom guest house that sits up on a hill over looking greens in every direction.
What I’ve come to appreciate about Kokodo is that it isn’t trying to be too much in a quaint historic town. That being said, it still manages to offer everything you need to have a unique and memorable experience.
The beds are massive. They can sleep a family of four comfortably or three NBA ballers. I kid you not. Issa biggest bed that I ever slept on. Room Rate is also amazingly affordable at $50-$60/ night.
The breeze is constant. Large windows up on a hill in a coastal town almost guarantees this.
The bathroom fixtures are solid, and by solid I mean most likely German-made so you know it’s a Mercedes kind of excellence.
The indoor living area design is open and mixed use. A Victorian style 3 sitter is next to the wooden dining table and chairs, and over on the other side the cane chairs are near the TV if you happen to be the kind of person who would rather sit in front of a screen then go for a walk. No judgement at all.
On the veranda, tables for two at the front entrance, and to the right of that the new garden.
The garden when the music is off, retreats to a sound track of birds and bugs, and leaves on the trees dance to the breeze. It is a lovely place to breathe, to reflect, and to write or whisper dirty things into someone’s ear. Again no judgement.
Kokodo’s Restaurant is famous for its seafood and local chop. My first attempt at Fante Kenkey was here some 4 years ago. Every time I return, it is either for the grilled octopus or the apem.
My favorite meal at Kokodo is breakfast. There really is nothing like coming out into that garden to be still and dive into a stout plate of Red Red (plantains and beans) or Kontomire with boiled plantains and salted tilapia. Then they also have fresh juices when they are in season. Their fresh pineapple juice was lush.
Kokodo is a perfect place to come alone. It’s relaxing and isolating enough without being in the middle of no where.
I fully intend to return to Cape Coast and for now no matter how many other new spots open it is going to be difficult to pull me away from another stay at Kokodo Guest House & Restaurant.
Kokodo is for those of us looking for a place to breathe, deep breaths.
