Travel Review: Africa World Airlines (Accra - Tamale - Accra)

I get anxiety every time I travel. If its traveling by air within West Africa multiply that anxiety by 10, and if its a local flight going from one city to another in the same African country that anxiety shoots up by 100. Last week I flew from Accra to Tamale and back via Africa World Airlines and it was so pleasant I felt foolish for having been anxious at all.

Check in was simple and orderly. We presented our IDs and we got our boarding passes. We waited in the Departure Hall which was nicely air-conditioned. When it was time to board an announcement was made and we boarded. It was all so simple and smooth you would think it were a bus ride.

When we got onboard a member of the cabin crew announced that Africa World Airlines was celebrating its 5th anniversary. He said they had started with just two departures but now they have 34 including international flights to Abidjan, Lagos, and Abuja. I mean how about that? So much growth in just 5 years.

While we were on the 1 hour flight to Tamale they did a raffle draw and someone won a free ticket as part of the carrier's anniversary celebration. To and from Tamale I honestly had no complaints and if this is the level of service and professionalism they have all the time then I highly recommend. Oh wait I do have one complaint. Its the food. They serve cupcakes as the snack while some like their sugary treats, I believe there are definitely better and more nutritious local food options. Other than that Africa World Airlines was excellent.

Africa World Airlines has as its shareholders Ghana's SNIT, HNA Aviation (China) and the China-Africa Development Fund (CADFund), and its found Mr. Togbe Afede.

If you're looking to travel to other parts of Ghana and can afford the $150-$200 return fare then Africa World Airlines gets my recommendation for travel locally and in the immediate region.
